Thank you for visiting New Covenant MCC’s website! I am Rev. Brian Hutchison, the proud pastor of New Covenant. I welcome you to enjoy the resources that you find here on our website, and I welcome you to join us for worship Sundays at 6:30pm. All are truly welcome to come and participate in worship and fellowship.

I began serving as the pastor of New Covenant MCC in October 2009, after finishing my Master of Divinity degree at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California in May 2009. Before this, I served as a Clergy Intern at MCC San Francisco 2007-2008 under the leadership of Rev. Chris Glaser and Rev. Lea Brown. I also served as a hospital Chaplain Intern at California Pacific Medical Center in 2009.

Before my professional ministry track started, I was an active member of MCC Washington DC and sang in their Gospel Choir from 2002 to 2006. At MCC-DC, I also helped to lead small groups, preached, and participated in various service ministries. At the same time, I was active with the Episcopal Anglican Campus Ministry (EACM) at the University of Maryland College Park, where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Certificate in LGBT Studies in 2006. I served as a Peer Minister for EACM, and as the treasurer for their student group.

My MCC journey started at MCC of Northern Virginia (MCC NOVA) when I was a teenager. I became part of their youth group after visiting their table at Youth Pride DC. I then moved on to regularly attend Open Door MCC in Boyds, Maryland until I started my undergraduate program. I am incredibly grateful for the hospitality that these communities showed to me when I needed a church to call home.

I grew up in a United Methodist church that helped me to grow in Christian community from the age of 3, through my teen years. It was through that church that I started my relationship with Jesus Christ that has only grown stronger to this day. I was a regular youth preacher, group leader, and soloist for several years at that church until God called me to MCC when I realized that my affectional orientation was toward people of the same gender.

I now reside with my spouse James in Maryland, close to my biological parents as well as those who we consider to be our chosen family.

In my preaching, I seek to be as radically inclusive as possible. I believe that all are welcome into the fold of God - no matter who you are, what you have done, where you have come from, or where you are on your journey of faith. I also attempt to preach and teach what is relevant to today’s world of many peoples and cultures, while remaining faithful to the witness of Scripture. I believe that God calls me through Scripture to give hope to those who have lost hope, to offer challenge for spiritual growth, and to give voice to and for those who are silenced by systems of injustice in the world. If you are thirsty for this kind of message, come and visit!
