Reverend Tim Agar

I'm so glad you found us out here on the Internet and I hope you will come back and visit our website often, or better still, come and worship with us any Sunday at 6:30 p.m. here in Laurel.

I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit more about myself and what brought me to the greater DC area and to New Covenant MCC. I graduated from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, in late May with a Masters in Divinity. I was ordained that same weekend at Peninsula MCC in San Mateo, California, where I had served as a pastoral intern for the previous two years with Rev. Terri Echelbarger. In 2002, prior to starting seminary and during my entire time of being at PSR, I attended and was a member at MCC of San Francisco. There I worked with Rev. Dr. G. Penny Nixon and for a brief time was the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Community Foundation of San Francisco.

Prior to going into seminary, I was in healthcare administration for 20 years, the last ten of which were spent as the Administrative Manager of Glide Health Services, a free clinic and program of The Glide Foundation/Glide Memorial United Methodist Church located in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. Prior to my 11 years in the SF Bay Area, I lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for four years and for the 14 years prior to that I was in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota.

I was raised Roman Catholic in a small town in west central Minnesota amidst a large Irish-Norwegian family of seven boys and one girl. Many of you know my mother died recently at 85 years of age and my dad (1978) and sister (1984) preceded her in death. I have one gay brother, who is being ordained a Transitional Deacon in the Catholic Church on November 8th and will be ordained a priest on May 29th, 2009. I had previously attended Catholic seminary for part of high school and college and served four churches as a full-time professional youth/young adult minister from 1979-87.

In mid-May I accepted a call to serve as the half-time Associate Pastor of MCC of Northern Virginia with Rev. Kharma Amos and after quickly wrapping up things on the west coast I traveled across the country and began there in mid-June. My primary responsibilities there include outreach, congregational care and justice ministries as well as preaching and other pastoral duties. I am single and live with my two miniature dachshunds -- Bruno (11) and Elmo (7) in the City of Fairfax, Virginia.

Blessings and Peace,
Rev. Tim
